Is this a French class?
No, this isn’t a structured class, but we have many people in our group who would be very happy to help you with your learning journey.
Feel free to bring a pen and notebook with a list of things you want to learn about and we’re sure you’ll find someone who will help you out. We do offer Back to Basics which is directed specifically towards beginners and has more structure than our normal weekly C&C meetings.
Do I need to be a member of Alliance Française Omaha to participate?
No, while we do have many members who are also members of AFO, we are an independent group so there is no expectation that you be an AFO member as well.
Do I need to prepare anything in advance of attending a meetup?
No. However, it never hurts to bring something to take notes. Also, if you’re just starting out there’s no shame in bringing along a notebook and preparing a few sentences to try out during the meetup.
I think *insert bar/café* would be a great place for a C&C meeting.
Would you consider having an event there?
Would you consider having an event there?
We are always open to suggestions for new places to try out for our events. Please feel free to get in touch with your suggestion and we will consider it.
We also are open to having C&C guest hosts once in a while, so please let us know if you are interested in hosting an event yourself.
Do I need to know French before I attend?
No, we truly encourage French learners and speakers at all levels to attend. And if you are fluent or a native speaker, your help is more than welcome!
Do you hold any events that are strictly in French?
Yes! If you’re an intermediate, advanced, or native speaker, we have at least one monthly event that is only in French.
What does it cost?
Nearly all events are completely free. There are no entry fees, no membership fees or dues. On the rare occasion we would meet at a place with an entry fee, we’ll include the specifics in event information.
Of course, you always have the option to buy a coffee or an adult beverage, depending on the availability of such items at the location. And while we only meet at places with no minimums, we do encourage you to support the establishments that host us.
They support C&C and we support them!
Are there attendance requirements?
Not at all. Come once a week, once a month, once a year. It’s totally up to you. Of course, we find that the more you attend and practice speaking the language, the better your French will become.
And besides, if we don’t see you often, we’ll miss you!
What do you talk about?
Anything and everything. Really, it’s up to you. Share something about yourself—how you spend your time, etc. Or a film you’ve watched recently. And be sure to ask questions of others to keep the conversation going! On occasion we do have themed events, but when that happens we’ll make sure you know about it in advance.
When do you meet?
One of the cool things about this group is that we switch it up regarding days of the week and the time. That way, everyone has a chance to attend at least occasionally. Mostly, events are held on Wednesday and Thursdays, but again, we do meet every day of the week.
Can this group really help me if I haven’t studied formal French?
Yes! There’s nothing like diving in to get your mouth moving and to actually hear the language as it’s meant to be spoken. Certainly, lessons, apps, podcasts, and other learning methods are recommended. But it’s essentially to start speaking the language right off the bat!
Can I bring a friend to a meetup?
Absolutely! We encourage you to bring a friend or two to Café et Conversation Midwest Meetups. The more, the merrier! It’s also a great opportunity for you to connect with new like-minded individuals and expand your social circles
